When touring the Zócalo area, be sure to visit the north end where the imposing Catedral Metropolitana resides; it's reported to be the oldest building in Latin America. It's also known for being the final resting place of General José de San Martin, famous liberator of Argentina. The structure's original foundation dates back to the 16th century, and additional building and refurbishing went on until the mid-19th century.

This one site gives visitors a chance to view three different cultures located in one spot. Aztec, Spanish and contemporary Mexican architecture meet here. You'll enjoy taking in the remains of the ancient Aztec city of Tlatelolco and the colonial Church of Santiago that dates to 1524. Be sure to note the juxtaposition of ancient culture with the modern Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (Department of Foreign Affairs) building. This site was also the tragic backdrop to the 1968 protest where Mexican soldiers fired into crowds of unarmed protesting students.

CENTRO HISTORICO. Located in the Zócalo next to the Catedral Metropolitana, the remains of this ancient temple were discovered in 1978. This amazing archaeological discovery was first built in 1375, and archeologists have unearthed seven additional layers, one on top of the other. An on-site museum exhibits a number of artifacts discovered at the site and educates visitors on Aztec civilization. Be sure to note the temple's sacrificial stone and the gigantic stone carving of Coyilxauhqui, an ancient Aztec goddess.

Otherwise known as the Plaza de la Constitución, the Zócalo is the main square in the Centro Histórico district. It's full of historic sights and ancient architecture. The area is always alive with people and it's the center for parades, ceremonies and celebrations on holidays and other special events. The north side of the Zócalo holds the Catedral Metropolitana, constructed in 1573, and boasting a Baroque interior. The ruins of the ancient Templo Mayor stand near the cathedral, while the eastern end of this prominent square holds the Palacio Nacional, home to the Federal Treasury and National Archives. A short walk west brings you to the Museo Nacional de Arte.
